# Comments and reply to the question: What do you suggest that we do in order to make it easier for new users to gain access and start working at Nanolab? Answer
1 tell the new users they must obey the rules in the cleanroom We tell all the rules in the Introductory course. We expect the users to be grown up, understand and obey the rules. If we find that a user does not obey the rules, he/she is normally expelled from the cleanroom for a period.
2 I think current methods are enough to train the new users efficiently. thank you
3 "Raise awareness to show that it is an opportunity to use the Nanolab clean room (with a safety course ofc). Online content works well when it is easily consumed - the Nanolab Digest News is excellent, but not if you have to go through several links to reach the content. This webpage is easily accessed if googling ""dtu clean room acces"" and seems to have all relevant information: https://www.nanolab.dtu.dk/use-nanolab" thank you
4 The availibility of some tools is an obvious problem, but I am aware that the cleanroom is being expanded so hopefully in the future there will be less run on the tool so one doesn't have to wait a month for the next available booking. Each month we have a review of which tools is a bottleneck for our users (i.e. heavily booked). We try to be proactive in aquiring more tools, however we have a big problem with the limited space in the cleanroom. These days also the delivery time of tools is a problem (and as always financing them)
5 I cannot said very satisfied since the machine that I need for my project has been out of use for a long period of time. Characterization tools worked fine. It is a complex tool, and it is normal that problems arise. It is what it is. We do try to repair the tools as fast as possible. However availability and delivery of spareparts is difficult for the moment. Not to mention to get a service technician
6 better and more correct information in regards to when the various courses/teachings are. ALSO (very impotrant to me): please update all the usermanuals with comprehensive puctures. Right now, the majority of the guides are just text, explaining quite complex things with lots of mentions on how to use/controll machines, but no picyures. the Wordentech has some pictures and the help immemsly, in my oppinion. Our manuals are written by the different specialists and each has his/hers view on how a manual should be. We understand your wish for pictures in manuals but we are running a university lab space and must expect that users can read and understand written instructions. We do not make Pixi books.

We also have the hands-on parts for this reason.

7 It is really a pleasure to work and conduct your experiments in the cleanroom. I do not have any specific suggestions. In my opinion, everything works as it should be. Thank you!
8 You are already doing pretty good. Thank you! Thank you!
9 The trainings takes too long time and led to very slow pace in work progress.

Some of the training materials and videos are not made in a good way for learning. For example, EBL course did not explain well what Beamer is in the beginning and led to a lot of confusion in learning. Some instruments, especially the E-Beam writer is very very heavily booked, and needs to book in three weeks, and it will be unavailable for two months.

Hands-on trainings takes the time it takes. We have cleanroom launch meetings for new users in order to help planning their work.

We try to improve and correct the online Learn courses the best we can. We always welcome feedback and the more concrete it is the better we can correct it. Each month we have a review of which tools is a bottleneck for our users (i.e. heavily booked). We try to be proactive in aquiring more tools, however we have a big problem with the limited space in the cleanroom. These days also the delivery time of tools is a problem (and as always financing them).

10 I think the current system is fine :) Thank you!
11 Some of the simple instruments probably does not need both training and an evaluation; the TPTs are slightly confusing - I first did all the TPTs at DTU Learn and later I found that I wasn't supposed to do all of them. "We leave it to the instructors to decide how much training is needed for a particular tool and user. We also try to move as much training online as possible.

We are sorry about the misunderstanding about TPTs. This is one reason why we call all new users to a Cleanroom Launch meeting where we discuss TPT among other things. "

12 I'm not sure how to organise it better, but my experience is that training the new students takes quite a lot of time. I know it's difficult to fit all the trainings and I have no idea how to improve it, but that would help. :) Yes, it takes much time and effort but this is what we at Nanolab are here for.
13 I think that it is already quite easy to gain access to Nanolab. Perhaps if you wish that more people would use Nanolab, then some information events for students/companies would be interesting. thank you for the idea
14 I think everything is good, but maybe it would be nice to consider two introduction sessions in the clean room for feeling more confident and better connection of new users with clean room atmosphere We need to balance resources and efforts. Every user has a different experience of this.
15 måske ville det være en ide at man kom med i renrummet og så et udstyr i brug, før man havde sin egen træning. Det er ofte lettere at forstå, hvis man kan koble det læste til noget praktisk. Tak for ideen. Det er vores erfaring at opmærksomheden og udbyttet er større hvis brugeren selv skal bruge maskinen og at det er dennes egne prøver.
16 Maybe include signing up for specific tool training for individuals as part of the training to access the cleanroom. Then new users can get started faster. it might also mean you can better coordinate tool training to group new users together, similar to SEM training. In our experience our users has so differing requirements that this would be impractical in most cases. We try include this in our Cleanroom Launch meetings for new users.
17 More regular updates and reminders for when the cleanroom's normal activities will be disrupted by maintenance etc. including when said maintenance will be completed, if there are delays etc. We will do our best to improve. But many times unforseen problems, delivery issues, illness etc. disrupt our plans.
18 Current process is fine. thank you
19 Regarding downtime of the cleanroom/branches of the cleanroom. When the statement says that the cleanroom will be down from date X to day Y, keep the downtime within that period. It seems as if in almost all cases, Nanolab will start shutting equiptment down the day before X and clean-up and restarting the equipment will be the day after Y. Secondly, change of precursors in the ALD 1 should also be written out in timely manner. EVES is usually good at this, but some of the others that are doing this change sometimes just come in and tell us that they will do the change ""now"". This is really annoying since it breaks up the processesing that I am dong on the spinner and CNI's that are located in the same room. Also, they usually say ""it will only take 10 minutes"" whereas in reality I have waited both 30 and 45 minutes before, which is NOT 10 minutes... This is something we are more aware of now and will try to improve.

We will let this pass on to persons that change precursors

20 Maybe only minor updates of the safety course on the use of the earphones... to be honest it is difficult to find what is missed or difficult to find. We believe the rules for taking mobile phones and wearing earplugs arewell explained in the introductory course.
21 Since I've started in February the "nanoparticles" fumehood seems to collect empty sample boxes and some wafer remainings, etc. Should we arrange some rules of thumb for cleaning up after yourself, or maybe there are some I don't know about. All users should always clean up after them self.
22 LabAdvisor and Kemibrug should not be so difficult and advanced, as not all users are using it during work. "We try to have as much relevant information in LabAdviser as possible. Some users need and are happuy about the advanced stuff.

We are not responsible for Kemibrug. It is made as a collaboration between several universities and I think the same as said about LabAdviser applies to kemibrug."

23 (I have not asked for access recently so I am not sure if it is still relevant)

Entrace to the package training more often or more automatized for example: access to all dry etchers and lithography.

Most of the Lithography TPT is now online. Training on the individual machines requires usually only one hands-on training.

The Dry etch TPT is now online with quiz. The dry etch tools are so complicated and different that we need to have hands-on trainings on each individual tool.

24 It would be nice to have reminders of basic processes such as how to discard used bottles, where to look or who to ask for chemicals that are finished in the shelves, where to find unused tweezers, etc. The basic processes should be covered in the intro package and info should be in LabAdviser. We will consider if an update/better overview can be made.
25 It would actually be nice with an overview pdf-document aimed at detailing relevant contact people and courses needed for gaining access. "Thank you for you suggestion. However, we believe that such a document would quickly become outdated.

We prefer using either our homepage or LabAdviser."

26 I think video tutorials and training videos are very helpful to accelerate the training independent of staff availability, and I think you are already including many options here, which is great. So I suggest to continue with that. Thank you!
27 I would suggest making more clear what has to be done in the TPTs for getting the training, because sometimes the Learn webpages were not finished and well enough explained. We try to improve and correct the online Learn courses the best we can. We always welcome feedback and the more concrete it is the better we can correct it.
28 Good job in general! thank you
29 I think the online course material on the equipment and procedures is so very nice! Same for the tests. Terrific idea. Hope tests and quizzes are carried over for all areas (lithography, thin film etc.) instead of having to go to 2x2-4 hour lectures. It is not necessarily easy material, and so its nicer to be able to do all of it in ones own pace.

I don't know how to get more users though:(

thank you
30 The only reason I put ""dissatisfied"" under is due to the fact that whenever I ask for help on the machines, if it behaves unexpectedly, hardly any staff inside the cleanroom knows the equipment. I do understand that no one can know all the machines, and that I can reach other staff outside the cleanroom on email, which is perfectly fine.

So I didn't put satisfied, as I am rarely satisfied with the answers to my questions inside the cleanroom, but I am okay with it, because I know I can find someone working outside the cleanroom who can assist me.

We have more than 200 tools in the cleanroom. No one can be expert on all of them.
31 Faster response from the staffs/super-users, probably. We try to work as efficient as possible but we also have other duties and meetings to attend.
32 The hands on training with chemicals as the last step of the safety course is too short and not sufficient for the new users. I think doing some practical projects on dummy wafers both in the fume hoods and the wet benches would be nice. We will try to make it more clear that you can always ask for more assistance also when it comes to practical training in e.g. fumehoods and wet benches.
33 I am very satisfied with the Nanloab conditions and the performance of the infrastructures. The only thing I would improve is to expand the limitation of bookings during working hours in some machines since some of them are heavily booked and there are weeks when is impossible to use the machines. Concerning the booking rules. We make these rules so that the time available on a machine can be distributed among the users. Usually there are free slots in the evening or in weekends. On certain tools safety may not allow usage outside normal working hours.
34 More online video trainings would help a lot to accelerate the procedures. In addition, the videos would refresh the memory of new user in case of doubts. We are working on this. It requires however a lot of ressources.
35 More introductionary courses We have introductory hands-on course once per week, Tuesday or Friday. At semester start we often schedule more hands-on trainings. We have to balance our resources with the demand
36 Perhaps a yearly recap of safety training. It has been quite some time since I had mine, and it would be nice to have it refreshed. We will have a refresh safety this autumn/winter
37 Everything is perfect here - no space to improve. Thank you!
38 One can add same type of equipment so it can avoid unnecessary waiting time We need space and money!
39 No more suggestions, overall Nanolab has done a good job in helping new users. Thank you!
40 Quite frequently we found ourselves missing miscellaneous items (carriers, syringes, filters etc.) inside the cleanroom. It would be nice if there was a system for regular checking and replacement of such items similar to how it is done for the chemicals. We have student workers to fill up the most common supplies. You are welcome to give a notice when the supplies in the cleanroom are running low (best before it is completely empty).
41 More frequent introduction courses We have introductory hands-on course once per week, Tuesday or Friday. At semester start we often schedule more hands-on trainings. We have to balance our resources with the demand
42 In my case, everyone I contacted from Nanolab answered quickly and were very welcoming, so I don't have any complaints. thank you
43 Maybe it would be nice that Labmanager had a way to see everyone who's inside the Cleanroom, instead of only saying the people that are using a machine. You can use the screen in the gowning. It shows who is in the cleanroom.
44 The 3-week long PhD course was very helpful for me Thank you!
45 Actually, I think current method for training new users is necessary and nothing could be canceled. Thank you!
46 You're doing a good job already! Thank you!
47 Don't let new users enter cleanroom. We are more than enough already.

Mange tak :D

Or since we are a university and need to educate new engineers, we could abandon people with more than 5 years work experience in the cleanroom ;D
48 more video materials about operating equipment. Yes, we are working on it but it requires a lot of resources
49 Nanolab is one of the best lab in the world Thank you!
50 Sometimes the PPE are not refilled properly. We have student workers to fill up the most common supplies. You are welcome to give a notice when the supplies in the cleanroom are running low (best before it is completely empty).
51 Great work Nlab. You guys are at the top of the game. thank you
52 Labmanager does not show when a room is closed due to fx. construction.

Sometimes the team of certain process is not available through the phones from inside the CR. Maybe a designated employee can be available for reach every weekend. Many students work on weekends. We need a bigger CleanRoom " || We know this an issue and will do our best to improve.

We also have other duties and meetings to attend.

The salary cost for having an on-call person available is simply too high. Yes and that is why we plan for a new cleanroom in a new building 346A

53 The communication about the electrical works (LED lights) was late (1 day before the start of the work). A longer notice would be appreciated. We know this an issue and will do our best to improve.
