Survey introduction

The May 2016 survey was the 14th survey carried out using a format where individual cleanroom users were asked about their view on various parts of using DTU Danchip's facilities and in particular the cleanroom facilities.

The questionnaire was send to 366 registered users (based on the logging of cleanroom use) unfortunately 13 of the e-mail adresses was obsolete and thus the mails bounced, which brought the total number of potential answers to 353 . In total 36 persons answered the questionnaire which means an answer fraction of 10%.

This page deals with the comments given as part of the questionnaire. Danchip values this feedback highly.

Comments

The comments appear here as they were written in the feedback field of the questionnaire. In a few cases they have been anonymized or the worst spelling mistakes corrected.

Comment 1

To many machines are out of use, and the information level concerning when they will work again are usually not existing.

Action: No action
The tools are in many cases highly specialized and complicated pieces of equipment which will fail from time to time. It is unfortunate that you have experienced a lot of tools which were not working, on average the tools are available more than 85% of the time. This is something we monitor on a regular basis. We also do our best to update LabManager with information on when tools are back online.

Comment 2

Even a cup for drinking some Water can not be found. No coffee at all.

Action: No action
In general eating and drinking is not allowed in any DTU lab.

Comment 3

It is the first time that I can work in a cleanroom environment and I am very satisfied of the whole organization.

Action: No action
Thank you very much.

Comment 4

Everyone in cleanroom is helpful.

Action: No action
Thank you very much, we try to support a good community.

Comment 5

E-beam is heavily booked. Information on cleanroom closure on alarm is sometimes late or non arriving, which is annoying when your are not located at 34-something.

Action: Increase throughput and information
The e-beam is indeed heavily used from time to time. We are looking into ways of increasing throughput by acquisition of more cassettes.
At the moment we are looking into ways of integrating the wallboard information into LabManager.

Overall, I think I am satisfied with DTU Danchip and DTU Cen's service. The facilities you maintained and provided for us can meet our basic characterization demand. You can also give a good training for beginners. In the near future, I wish that you can provide EDS-mapping function on Tecnai T20 G2 or Quanta FEG 200 ESEM, since this is a very popular method to acknowledge element distribution in samples. Additionally I also hope that you can keep using high-level CCD attached to all microscopes.

Action: No action
Thanks for the suggestion, we will consider it further, however, given the present load on the tools it is not our first priority.

Ingen hands-on erfaringer so far, men alt så overskueligt ud.

There are consistently quite a few systems being in limited or out of use, sometimes stopping production for several weeks and thus being extremely expensive for commercial users of the cleanroom. If this is for some reason unavoidable, then a simple backup plan for such situations would be nice.Considering that Danchip is close to a monopoly when it comes to cleanroom facilities in Denmark, the flexibility and willingness to serve customers is at times very limited, and in some situations even arrogant, e.g. "take it or leave it" offers or "you are here for us, not the other way around" attitude. Another example is the "yellow poster" at the entrance to the cleanroom which almost threatens cleanroom users - is that really how you would like to greet your customers when they enter your facility? With many startups from DTU these years, it would be a good idea with a more flexible pricing system. Currently, Danchip presents a major barrier for spin-out companies trying to enter the semiconductor market, by demanding very high prices on e.g. floor space and time spent in the cleanroom. It would make sense for both spin-outs, Danchip and DTU to have some sort of spin-out discount. In some situations equipment is changed/moved with very little notice. Perhaps targeted customer information should be considered. E.g. check who is actually using the equipment frequently (by looking in labmanager) and then inform them specifically in case of changes. The staff helpfulness in general is, as always, brilliant :-).

Pricingwise we are under very tight legal constraints.
We are running and maintaining the facility with a limited amount of resources, which means that occasionally tools will be down.
The number of users is around 450, which means that in most cases, accommodating the wishes of one user affects a number of other users. The poster at the entry to the cleanroom is indeed a threat, but a very deliberate threat in that we have tools which actually threaten the safety of others if users try to operate them while they are "Out of service".

The torrent of spam-mail fra Danchip users is still a major pain that has not been addressed. Every time someone deletes a booking or finishes early, the entire Danchip user list receives an mail, despite it being pure spam to 99% of recipients. This also means that vital information from Danchip is often overlooked, as it drowns in the sea of irrelevant email. This almost caused us to lose >100.000 DKK worth of chemicals in a cleaning raid, as our entire group had overlooked the email warnings regarding the cleaning, because of the extremely low signal-to-noise ratio of the email list. One wonders how much other important information is missed by Danchip users because of this issue. It would seem possible to send out "I finished early"-emails etc. via LabManager, so that only those who have training for and interest in the equipment in question gets notified. This would alleviate a major frustration for most Danchip customers, and increase safety in the cleanroom, by reducing the risk of critically important information being overlooked in the torrent of "I deleted my booking"-spam.

Action: Implement other channel for booking deletions/end of use
We acknowledge that this is a problem. We are looking into a couple of possible solutions to it. We hope to have something useful ready this fall. Until then, we can suggest using the filters in your mailprogram.
