Project description

Center of Excellence, IDUN has become world leader in micro-reservoir based advanced drug delivery systems (DDS). During the 4 years of research, it has been demonstrated that encapsulation of drug in microcontainers result in increasing the efficacy and bioavailability of the drug. To upscale the fabrication of microcontainers, a novel design of microcontainers, called micropatches, has been developed, which has been filed as a patent (PCT) application. The micropatches include multiple layers of different functional and drug coatings, that are punched through, using a fabrication process called hot punching. The industrial project has been defined to take the fabrication of micropatches from research lab to the manufacturing on industrial scale. The three main objectives of the project are: ①to develop and optimize slot die coating technique for thin, precise and accurate film deposition with different functionalities, ②to fabricate micropatches by applying hot punching on the slot-die coated films and to demonstrate proof-of-concept product by using a model drug, and finally, ③to integrate slot-die coating and hot punching on a roll-to-roll machine, showcasing the continuous manufacturing of oral drug delivery microdevices.
