TVIPS camera and EMplify software

Here you find some information about the TVIPS XF416 camera and some tips and bugs for the EMplify software.


XF416 camera

  • CMOS camera 4096x4096px resolution with minimum exposure time of 41ms (24fps).
  • 15.5x15.5µm2 pixel size

Don't burn scalebar

Don't burn a scalebar into your 16bit image! This will result in the following issue:

There is no need to burn the scalebar in the image. The 16bit tiff-file contains the image calibration to add a scalebar in ImageJ.


The live view images jumps

This only seems to happen when the Drift correction in the Live View is activated. Deactivating the feature should resolve the behavior.

The acquired image becomes white or black

This is a bug in the current EMplified version. It can happen that the images in the Viewport become completely white or black. This has to do with the contrast/brightness setting of the Histogram. In the "Standard new" layout, you can find the global Histogram on the left hand side. The Histogram is active on different windows depending on the operation:

  • When the Live View is running, it is active on the "Live View" window or the "Power Spectrum", depending on which window is selected.
  • When the Live View is NOT running, it is active on the "Viewport".

When the bug happens and you want to see your acquired image, stop the Live View and click on Reset C/B in the Histogram control panel. Now, the image in the Viewport should look normal. When the Live View is restarted, the image might turn white or black again. As long as you save in 16bit format, the saved images are fine. If you save in 8bit format, there might be an issue with the saved files (they are white or black as well).

So, the strong suggestion is: Save all images in 16bit format!

I can't see anything in the Power Spectrum

This seems to be a bug in the current version as well. It has to do with the zoom factor in the Power Spectrum.
Using the mousewheel, you can zoom in and out in the Power Spectrum at the mouse pointer position (like in the other windows as well). In the Power Spectrum tool bar, there is an icon for reset the zoom (square icon with two boxes). Click on the icon and the Power Spectrum zoom will reset. Now you should be able to see the whole Power Spectrum again.

The software or camera doesn't respond properly or freezes

The software is officially still in "beta"-phase. This means, there are still some bugs and it might shut down unexpected. Please report back any bugs you find.
In case the software crashes, just follow the steps:

  • Close the software (if needed)
  • If a re-start of the software doesn’t help, re-start the camera controller as well:
    • Go to the back of the screens, where the control box for the camera is
    • Push on the Camera button once (switched from green to red)
    • DON’T switch off the cooling!
    • Wait 10 sek and push it again (should become green again)
    • Restart the EMplified software

When EMplified crashed and the software is re-started after a crash, EMplified will also ask if unsaved images should be recovered.
If this procedure did not succeed, repeat the re-start but also re-start the TVIPS PC.
